The Soul of the Bushveld: Why Choose a Family-Owned Hunting Safari in Limpopo?

The Soul of the Bushveld: Why Choose a Family-Owned Hunting Safari in Limpopo?

Discover why a family-owned hunting safari in Limpopo offers something special. Since 1996, Modirwe Safaris has welcomed international hunters, families and friends for personalized African hunting adventures, warm bushveld hospitality and unforgettable experiences beyond the hunt.

Quick answer:

Established in 1996, Modirwe Safaris is a family-owned hunting and tourism operation based at Plaas Knopjesdoorn in Limpopo Province, approximately 15 km from Steenbokpan, South Africa. Our family-owned farm is our lodge and safari home base, and we also have access to numerous separate hunting concessions in Limpopo and other areas, subject to availability. Guests can enjoy five en-suite chalets, a fully solar-powered three-phase lodge supported by a backup generator, wide-ranging guest-area Wi-Fi and three meals a day tailored to the group. We prioritise traditional tracking and walk-and-stalk hunting where safe and practical, with safari arrangements adapted to the needs of our guests.

The African bushveld has a way of staying with you long after your journey ends. Sometimes it is the first tracks in the morning sand, the challenge of a careful stalk or the excitement of seeing a mature animal in its natural surroundings. Other times it is the people, the stories around the fire and the hospitality that makes a new place feel welcoming.

For Modirwe Safaris, a safari is never just a list of species. It is an opportunity to share the Limpopo bushveld, introduce guests to our way of life and build an experience around the people travelling with us.

Founded in 1996, Modirwe Safaris has grown from a family passion for the outdoors into a hunting and tourism operation welcoming guests from South Africa and abroad. As we mark 30 years in 2026, the approach remains personal: understand the guest, plan carefully and enjoy the journey.

1. A Family Safari Legacy Since 1996

Modirwe Safaris is a family-run business built around a love of wildlife, hunting, the South African bushveld and good hospitality.

Over the decades, the Human family has welcomed visitors with different hunting backgrounds, languages and expectations. Some travel to Africa for the first time. Others return because they value the experience and the relationships built over earlier visits.

We believe the quality of a safari cannot be measured by the size of a lodge or the number of trophies in a photograph alone. The people, the planning, the hunting experience and the moments shared together matter just as much.

2. Meet the Human Family — Petrus, Retha and PJ

Petrus Human founded Modirwe Safaris in 1996 and remains its owner, outfitter and a Professional Hunter (PH). His experience and knowledge of the bushveld shape the hunting side of the operation, including responsible field decisions and planning a hunt around each guest.

Retha Human is one of the family's hosts and helps create the welcoming atmosphere and guest experience at the lodge. Hospitality, comfortable accommodation and meals planned around the people staying with us are important parts of a Modirwe safari.

PJ Human — Business Operations, Bookings and Digital Management plays an active supporting role across several parts of Modirwe Safaris. Although PJ is not always physically at the lodge, he assists with guest enquiries and email correspondence, booking coordination, administration and accounting tasks. He also manages the Modirwe website and social media, reviews the business's systems and processes, and helps identify improvements or issues that need attention.

Working alongside Petrus and Retha, PJ helps keep the business organised and connected with guests and booking agents, including during the planning stages before visitors arrive in South Africa.

Whether you are an experienced African hunter, planning your first trip, travelling as a couple or bringing family and friends, a good safari begins with a conversation about the experience you want.

3. Our Family-Owned Farm Near Steenbokpan

Our camp and lodge are located on our family-owned farm, Plaas Knopjesdoorn, in Limpopo Province, approximately 15 km from Steenbokpan, in the greater Lephalale area.

This is our home base and also one of our hunting properties: guests stay, relax, gather for meals and prepare for their days in the bush, and hunting takes place on the farm as appropriate to the species and safari. Having an established family property helps provide a consistent, welcoming place to return to at the end of each day's activities.

Our family-owned home farm is separate from the many concession properties and other hunting areas available to us. These are not all one continuous hunting property, and the areas used are confirmed as part of each safari's planning.

4. Hunting Areas in Limpopo, Gauteng and the Free State

Beyond our family farm, Modirwe Safaris has access to numerous hunting concessions and additional hunting areas, subject to the species, dates, permissions and arrangements for each safari.

These include concession properties in the Steenbokpan area and elsewhere in Limpopo. They are separate from our family-owned farm, and we confirm the specific areas and their availability when planning each safari.

We also have hunting opportunities involving Gauteng and the Free State, including the Winburg area, depending on the species, current access, permits and agreed arrangements. Guests are told beforehand which area or areas form part of their booked safari.

Different environments offer different opportunities. The right area depends on the species being pursued, the experience guests want and the arrangements available for their travel dates.

Important distinction:

Our family-owned farm, approximately 15 km from Steenbokpan, is where our lodge and camp are based. In addition, we have access to numerous separate concessions and hunting areas. We confirm which area applies to each safari before the hunt.

5. A Lodge Powered by Three-Phase Solar Energy

Our three-phase solar-power system supplies the lodge, guest chalets and main house. We also have a backup generator to support operations when required.

This is an important part of the camp's infrastructure, helping support comfortable accommodation and everyday lodge operations in the bushveld.

The lodge operates primarily on solar-generated electricity rather than relying on a conventional grid supply for its day-to-day needs. Our infrastructure helps guests enjoy the atmosphere of the African bushveld while having access to modern essentials.

6. Five Private En-Suite Chalets and Bushveld Comforts

At Modirwe, guests return from the bush to comfortable accommodation and a place to unwind.

Our camp offers five chalets, each with its own en-suite bathroom and shower. Our normal lodge capacity is up to 10 guests; any larger group requires separate accommodation arrangements and confirmation before booking.

Facilities include:

  • Five private chalets with en-suite bathrooms and showers
  • A traditional lapa for gathering and enjoying the bushveld atmosphere
  • A swimming pool
  • A bar and lounge area
  • Wi-Fi coverage across all five chalets and the principal guest areas, including the lapa, dining/bar spaces and pool area (connection speeds can vary)
  • Daily laundry service
  • Meals prepared for the guests staying with us
  • Professional Hunters, camp staff and safari support

After a day of tracking and walking, guests can shower, relax by the pool, share stories in the lapa or spend time with friends and family.

See our camp and accommodation for more information.

8. Three Meals a Day — With Your Preferences in Mind

Food is an important part of feeling at home on safari, and no two groups have exactly the same preferences.

Our hunting packages include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each evening we normally serve a three-course dinner: starter, main course and dessert, with menus planned around the group.

But we do not assume that everyone wants to eat the same thing, at the same time or in the same quantity.

Breakfast: Light or a Full Cooked Meal?

Some guests prefer something light before heading into the bush — perhaps coffee, fruit, cereal or a small breakfast. Others enjoy a warm cooked breakfast such as bacon and eggs.

We discuss these preferences ahead of time, so the meal plan suits the group and the day's activities.

Lunch: Planned Around Your Day

Lunch can also be discussed in relation to the group's activities and preferences. The aim is to keep guests comfortable and well looked after without forcing every group into an identical timetable.

Dinner: Time to Relax Together

After a day in the field, dinner is an opportunity to unwind, enjoy a starter, main course and dessert, and talk about the day's experiences.

Dietary Preferences, Allergies and Cultural Needs

Before arrival, we ask about the people in the group, their countries of origin and the food they enjoy. We want to know if anyone is vegetarian, has food allergies, avoids particular ingredients or requests another dietary arrangement. We discuss these needs in advance and agree on what the kitchen can safely provide, particularly for severe allergies.

Guests arrive from different countries and cultures, and we would rather ask what they prefer than make assumptions. Breakfast might be light or cooked, lunch can fit around the safari day, and dinner is planned to be an enjoyable time together. Please share all specific dietary requirements ahead of your visit.

Tell us before you arrive:

Do you prefer a light or cooked breakfast? Does anyone need vegetarian meals? Are there allergies, intolerances or other dietary requirements? Is there a favourite dish or a type of food your group would particularly enjoy? We can discuss the possibilities when planning your stay.

9. Why We Prefer Traditional Walk-and-Stalk Hunting

For Modirwe Safaris, one of the most meaningful parts of a hunting safari is the traditional walk-and-stalk experience.

We prefer the experience of finding fresh tracks, reading the signs left by animals, studying the wind, moving carefully through the bush and working with the Professional Hunter to approach a suitable animal.

It takes patience. Sometimes the animal moves before a stalk can begin. Sometimes a track leads somewhere unexpected. Sometimes the terrain or the wind means it is better to start again.

That is hunting as we enjoy it: spending time on foot, learning the bush, making decisions carefully and appreciating the full experience rather than simply driving close to an animal for a quick opportunity.

We do not guarantee that every stalk ends successfully. The challenge and unpredictability are part of what make the experience rewarding.

Our preferred approach:

Track, observe, plan and stalk — not simply drive until an easy shot presents itself. We value the traditional skills, patience and teamwork involved in a proper bushveld hunt.

10. How Our 4x4 Vehicles Support the Safari

We use 4x4 safari vehicles to travel between camp and hunting areas, access suitable starting points and support the practical side of the day's activities.

The vehicles are there to help the safari run safely and efficiently, particularly where terrain and distances make transport necessary.

But using a 4x4 to reach a hunting area is not the same as treating hunting as a drive-up activity. Where suitable and practical, our preference is to continue on foot and experience the stalk.

The approach is always discussed with the Professional Hunter, taking account of the species, conditions and the people in the group.

11. Every Hunter Is Different — So We Plan Accordingly

Not every hunter can or wants to walk the same distance.

Some guests are fit and enjoy spending hours tracking on foot. Others may be older, recovering from an injury or managing limited mobility. Some might be completely new to the uneven terrain of the African bushveld.

We want to understand this before the safari, so that the group can discuss realistic expectations and suitable arrangements.

Helpful questions include:

  • How comfortable are you walking over uneven terrain?
  • Do you prefer shorter walks or longer tracking sessions?
  • Do you need more frequent breaks?
  • Do you have mobility restrictions we should plan around?
  • Are there any practical needs that could affect your day in the field?

The aim is not to push guests beyond what is comfortable or safe. Our traditional hunting preference remains important, but we also believe a good outfitter should listen to the individual and work within safe, realistic conditions.

Any adaptation depends on the hunting area, species, terrain, available support and Professional Hunter's judgement; not every request will be practical in every setting.

12. A Safari Tailored to Your Group

No two groups arrive with the same interests. We therefore discuss the details before putting together an itinerary.

We consider the species on your wishlist, your preferred hunting method, the number of hunters, non-hunting companions, your experience level, fitness, accommodation needs, food preferences and desired pace.

Some guests want a focused hunting trip. Others want time for photography, tourism or simply relaxing at camp. Families and groups of friends may need a balance of activities.

Our goal is to create a practical plan for the people who are actually coming, rather than asking every visitor to follow exactly the same programme.

13. Book Directly or Through Your Safari Agent

International guests may find Modirwe Safaris through a recommendation, our website, social media or a trusted hunting or travel agent. PJ Human supports enquiries, emails and booking administration and works with the family and relevant agents to coordinate guest requirements. Much of this work can be handled remotely, so guests benefit from his involvement even when he is not physically at the lodge.

Guests are welcome to enquire directly, and we also work with agents involved in helping their clients plan an African safari.

Whichever route you use, the important details still need to be discussed: travel dates, number of guests, species, hunting method, accommodation, food preferences, physical requirements and the inclusions of the agreed safari.

Where an agent is involved, we coordinate the relevant planning details through the agreed booking arrangements so guests know what to expect.

Contact Modirwe Safaris to begin the conversation.

14. Families, Couples and Non-Hunting Companions

A South African safari can be an experience shared by hunters and non-hunters alike.

Some guests travel with a partner who enjoys wildlife photography, while others bring children, parents or friends who want to experience the atmosphere of an African lodge.

When planning a group safari, tell us who is coming and what each person enjoys. We can then discuss suitable ways to balance hunting, rest and any additional activities.

Accommodation arrangements, available activities and suitability for children or guests with particular needs should be confirmed before booking.

15. More Than Hunting: Explore South Africa

Many visitors travel a long way to experience the African bushveld, and some wish to combine their hunting safari with sightseeing or other tourism activities.

Modirwe also offers tourism experiences in South Africa. If you would like to include additional destinations, wildlife photography or a different kind of excursion, let us know when planning.

Guests interested in seeing destinations beyond South Africa can tell us about their plans. Any international extension would require separate arrangements with suitable travel providers and must be confirmed independently. Cross-border touring is not advertised here as an included or guaranteed Modirwe service.

16. Clear Pricing, Packages and Inclusions

Good safari planning also means understanding what is included in the quotation and what is charged separately.

Rather than copying trophy fees into an article that could become outdated, we encourage guests to use the official Modirwe Safaris pricing and packages pages and request a quotation tailored to their trip.
